Is There a FireSmart
Rebate in 100 Mile House?
Short answer: no. Longer answer below, including where the $5,000 figure everyone keeps quoting actually comes from, and what genuinely is free around here.
The short version
Free: a professional FireSmart home assessment, from the District of 100 Mile House or the Cariboo Regional District. Plus waived tipping fees on vegetative debris at Lac La Hache, 108 Mile Ranch and Lone Butte.
Not available here right now: a homeowner rebate on the actual mitigation work.
What the CRD says
The Cariboo Regional District puts it about as plainly as it can be put: “FireSmart assessments are available, however rebates are not available.”
What the CRD does offer is genuinely useful:
- A region-wide education program run by a FireSmart Educator
- Free professional home assessments
- Waived tipping fees on vegetative debris in Community Wildfire Protection Plan areas, Lac La Hache, 108 Mile Ranch and Lone Butte
CRD FireSmart Educator: (250) 392-3351
What the District of 100 Mile House offers
The District runs its own FireSmart program, funded by a grant from the provincial Community Resiliency Investment program. It provides free home assessments, requested online through the FireSmart BC platform.
As of this writing, the District publishes no rebate program or dollar amount.

Then where does the $5,000 figure come from?
It's real, just not here.
The provincial template allows a rebate of up to $5,000, capped at 50% of total cost, for mitigation work within 30 metres of a home, gutter cleaning, vegetation removal, fire-resistant siding, windows and roofing. The process runs: FireSmart Home Ignition Zone assessment by a qualified Local FireSmart Representative or Wildfire Mitigation Specialist → do the work → follow-up assessment → rebate issued.
But that rebate only exists where a local government has taken Community Resiliency Investment funding and chosen to run one. Plenty of BC communities have. The Cariboo Regional District currently hasn't, and the District of 100 Mile House doesn't publish one.
The funding itself, the CRI / FireSmart Community Funding & Supports program administered by UBCM, is open to local governments and First Nations only. Not homeowners. Not contractors. The 2026 intake closed on April 30, 2026.
Check it yourself, this changes
Programs come and go with each funding cycle. Before you rule anything out, call the District FireSmart Coordinator at (250) 395-2434 or the CRD FireSmart Educator at (250) 392-3351 and ask what's running this year. If a rebate opens up, we'll update this page.
Why we wrote this page
Because the wrong answer is everywhere. Search “FireSmart rebate BC” and you'll find the $5,000 figure quoted with no geography attached, and a fair number of contractors happy to let you assume it applies to you until the invoice arrives.
It's a better business to be the one who told you the truth about a rebate you're not getting than the one who let you find out later.
What we'd actually recommend
- Book the free assessment. Both the District and the CRD will send a qualified rep. It costs you nothing and you get a prioritised list.
- Do the Immediate Zone yourself. The first 1.5 metres is where the fire actually starts, and most of that work is a weekend with a rake, move the firewood off the deck, pull the juniper away from the siding, clean the gutters, clear to mineral soil.
- Bring us the report for the rest. Conifer thinning, limbing to two metres, crown spacing and dead standing removal in the Extended Zone is where a saw and a certified faller earn their money.
- If you're in Lac La Hache, 108 Mile Ranch or Lone Butte, say so: the waived tipping fee comes straight off your quote.
